Beauty is to be found everywhere in the mountains, in all seasons, and when Winter brings its white frozen water crystals that we know as snow, we see yet another variation of highland beauty.
These last weeks the uplands of Guadarrama have received some snow, not a huge amount..but somewhat more than we are accustomed to in December in recent years. Even enough to ski in some places.
As always this transformation to white, after the long months of Summer’s yellows, greens, browns and greys, impacts the senses powerfully.
Of course the wonder of Winter does not depend exclusively on frozen phenomena..the low sun works magic in the sky and with the mountains that rise up toward it.
Unfortunately, the beast that perceives all this beauty, the human animal, has an ugly tendency to spread garbage around the mountains – as s-he does, we might add, everywhere else too, on the flatlands, in the sea, in the sky.
Puerto de Navacerrada is a notorious trashpit, unequalled in all the Sierra. Much of the rubbish to be found in the area is left by visitors, particularly plastics used for sliding and food packaging. But even the trash deposited in the bins doesn’t get properly disposed of..a lot of the garbage that you can see here on the ground eventually ends up in streams and waterways. Later to become Madrid’s drinking water. Why can’t we do this better?
Recycling doesn’t seem to be much of a priority with local businesses either, as the photo demonstrates..boxes of large plastic bottles deposited in the normal containers when there are two plastics containers (half empty) within a few seconds walk.
Whatever about the Beauty, that’s one pathetic little Beast.
