Yes, believe it or not, powder has been skied on May 19-20..in Sierra de Guadarrama. Almost perfect conditions were to be found in La Hoya de Peñalara these last days, following several days of snowfall since Thursday the 16th.
Even though i knew that snow had fallen i was more than a little surprised on Sunday morning to find over 30cm in the Cotos area just above 1850m..
..and above 2000m where the old snow still survives this new layer of cold dry snow has made for wonderful conditions for ski. Yes, even pow ski..
It’s not really that unusual to get snow above 2000m in May, but normally you would expect minimal quantities with temps around 0º making for humid conditions..or even alternating snow and rain. Last weekend however, temps were low – according to Venta Marcelino in Cotos the minimum temperature Sunday-Monday at 1830m was -4.7ºC with maximums over the weekend not much above zero – which means that the snow fell cold and dry ..and stayed that way for a couple of days. Powder! (..and Cold Spring Days!)
While it’s phenomenal to be able to ski in such good conditions in May..there’s the rub – it’s phenomenal, extraordinary. This Winter has already been exceptional, and Spring seems to be keen to not be outdone.. weird weather once more methinks!
