Horses in the snow

Horses foraging after snowfall

Not everybody’s having a spree in the snow. Take these horses for instance.. ok, it makes for a pretty picture but sometimes i can’t help feeling a little sorry for animals – particularly domesticated animals – when i see them subjected to the harsh conditions of a real Winter. Yes, little wild birds appear dead on the ground too..but they in some sense choose the environment in which they live, they are in fact products of that environment. These horses don’t get much choice, they are not a specifically “alpine” or guadarrama breed..and many horses in the Cercedilla area spend the nights out, no stable to shelter in, with a wind chill factor of maybe -15 or -20ºC..and no, they don’t have access to gore tex windstopper clothing.

Can’t be much fun trying to graze thru half a foot of that cold white stuff either..

About coldspringdays

Éireannach is ea mé, i mo chonaí insan Spáinn. Rugadh mé i lár na tuaithe, ar feadh blianta bhí mé ag teitheadh uaithi, i bhfad as an tuath, ach sa deireadh d'fhill mé, ar ais go dtí an tuath.. An Irishman am I, settled in Spain. Born was I in the middle of the country, for years I ran from it, far from the country, but in the end I returned, back to the country..
