Big noise in the local media about snowfall in the Sierra..and after two weeks of relatively cold conditions with weather fronts rolling in from the Atlantic we were left with the enormous accumulation of.. 25cm of snow. Wow. 25cm above 1800m that is..here in Cercedilla at 1200m we got 2-3cm of snow. Spirits sagged. Ski-stations, disappointedly tho not surprisingly after several days of freezing temps, opened, undaunted, to an avid and undiscerning public their curious version of artificial “polvo” which is more akin to concrete than powder. People see what they want to see. And just when one would have expected the usual ballyhoo to continue..there came a real surprise (for me at least): in the space of four or five days i came across several media references to “how things have changed”..”it seems we just don’t get snow any more like we used to”..”over the last decade it’s not just the occasional bad year or two, the best we can hope for now is an occasional good year”..and so forth. Wow. Wonder of wonders..hard heads softening?! After years of hearing the various homespun theories of natural drought cycles..the big snows will come again..it’s normal, nuthin’ to do with global warming, etc ..looks like more folks are beginning to wise up.
And there will be more opportunities for the acquisition of wisdom over the next few days as another Atlantic front comes in from the West, the kind that used to bring dumps of snow in December ..but i’m afraid that what’s coming our way this week is a whole lotta liquid precipitation with crystals few and far between.. Sad.
