Natural sarcasm?

And the cold, wet, snowy weather goes on! Into mid-April! In a serious Winter it wouldn’t be all that surprising to have wintry conditions continue well into April. But this Winter was anything but “serious” (you might even say it was pretty frivolous).. So what’s going on? Are the weather gods trying to make some kind of point? Is Mother Nature being sarcastic?

Even though many look to climate change theory for an explanation – and I don’t doubt that there’s a connection – traditional wisdom from the other side of the Pyrenees has this to say:

L’hiver n’est pas bâtard, s’il ne vient tôt, il vient tard.                                                            (Winter is not [aleatory], if it doesn’t come early, it’ll come late) ..or even more specific:

Qui à Noël se chauffe au soleil, à Pâques brûle la bûche de Noël.                                                (If you warm yourself in the sun at Christmas, at Easter you’ll burn the Yule log)

And more locally we hear that: Cuando en marzo mayea, en mayo marcea (When in March it’s like May, in May it’ll be like March).. and so it seems this year as the month of May draws closer.

About coldspringdays

Éireannach is ea mé, i mo chonaí insan Spáinn. Rugadh mé i lár na tuaithe, ar feadh blianta bhí mé ag teitheadh uaithi, i bhfad as an tuath, ach sa deireadh d'fhill mé, ar ais go dtí an tuath.. An Irishman am I, settled in Spain. Born was I in the middle of the country, for years I ran from it, far from the country, but in the end I returned, back to the country..
